Dragon's Dogma 2 angers fans and debuts with negative reviews on Steam

The original installment of Dragon's Dogma arrived in 2012, while the Dark Arisen expansion debuted in 2013. After a long wait of more than 10 years, the sequel is finally available for all platforms. What should have been a moment of euphoria and happiness turned into a great controversy.

Dragon's Dogma 2 officially debuted on March 21, 2024. Although the number of units sold is unknown, we already know that it broke records for simultaneous players on Steam. On launch day, it gathered 200,175 concurrent users, meaning it surpassed the peaks of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter 6, and more Capcom games.

The RPG title currently boasts an average rating of 87 points on Metacritic, meaning that the press gave it a thumbs up; However, it was not until the official debut that the first major controversy arose.

Due to micropayments and technical problems, Dragon's Dogma 2 debuts with negative reviews on Steam

Upon launch, the community discovered that there are 21 items that can be purchased for real money and that offer very useful benefits, such as changing the appearance of the avatar or reviving the dead. While most of these items can also be obtained in-game, players argue that they should be easier to find and cheaper.

One of the most problematic items sold for real money are Crystal Holders, which allow players to teleport to a selected destination. Let us remember that director Hideaki Itsuno said in an interview that fast travel is for boring games, so he draws attention that this function does exist, but it is only available to those who resort to microtransactions.

In parallel, players reported that there are performance problems, errors with textures, frame drops and other technical problems that reduce the user experience. Consequently, the game debuted on Steam to mostly negative reviews.

Right now, only 39% of the 14,032 ratings available on Valve's platform are positive. Following the controversy, Capcom issued a statement on Steam apologizing and addressing complaints from Dragons Dogma 2 fans.

“We would like to update you on the status of the following items, on which we have received numerous comments from the community. To all those who were looking forward to the game, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience,” the company said.

In the text, Capcom listed the items that can be obtained for free in the game and for real money in the store. When it comes to technical problems, he promised that he is already investigating the errors and promised that he is already working on solutions. He also confirmed that he is looking into the possibility of adding a feature on Steam that allows players to restart their game.
